First had trouble having ID3 read some of my music files. Some tracks appeared "grey" when I tried to open them through the file-open tab.

Soon realized that this was because these files were in m4a format instead of mp3. Changed them to mp3 format, and was allowed to "open" them. But then was told that ID3 could not read the tag. Does this have something to do with the tag format in m4a being different from that of mp3 (assuming a simple swap of .names doesn't make the difference,) if so how can this tag format be changed at its source?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The format of M4A and MP4 tags is not the same as an ID3 tag in an MP3 or AIFF and thus cannot be read by ID3 Editor. If you need this feature now, we do have a command line editor for MP4 which you can get by contacting support.
If you just need to tag the file, you can of course convert the file in iTunes to MP3 with very little loss of quality.
